1. Challenge of Democracy – addressing corruption

Overview: In that corruption weakens and, ultimately, destroys democracy and democratic institutions, this workshop will focus on the challenges and opportunities in the fight against cor­ruption.


2. The Role of Media in deepening democracy

Facilitator: Patricia Mukhim (Journalist, India)

Panelists: Bedan Mbugua (Director General for Development of Regional Medias, Kenya); Rupa Chinai (Journalist, India); Vijitha Yapa (Publisher, Sri Lanka); Rahul Dev (Journalist, India); Tarek El-Shiekh (broadcaster, Egypt)

Overview: In a democracy the media is expected to hold governments accountable but the media itself is expected to self-regulate. While a free media is the hallmark of democracy, what happens if the media turns licentious? Media people will turn the questions on themselves


3. Building participative democracy, from the ground up

Facilitator: Suhas Borker (Editor and Exec. Director, CFTV NEWS, India)

Panelists: Moses John (ONAD – South Sudan); Dr. Abul Hossain (CEO of Development Link Foundation, Bangladesh); Christoph Spreng (IofC Intl representative at The Council of Europe, Switzerland) 

Overview: Beyond voting in elections, the workshop will look at various models of participation: from the Indian Panchyat system to education in civic participation in South Sudan, from referenda in Swiss democracy to the vast impact of a global network like Avaaz.

Overview: Acknowledging the significant role of state institutions, this workshop may focus on the design of new institutions to address increasing complexities of administration.


3. Civil Society and Elected Representatives: power struggle or partnership?

Facilitator: Suhas Borker 

Panelists: Jean Paul Mugiraneza (Lawyer, Rwanda); Patricia Nellie Njoki (Lawyer and a peace activist, Kenya); Aruna Roy (Social Activist and Magsaysay Award Winner, India); Jamie Storm (Urbana Campaign Peace Initiative, USA)

Overview: In the past 18 months, the power of civil society has had an impact as never before. Can there be collaboration with those in elected power? Or will there always be contests between civil society and governments? Can civil society and mass movements help create more responsive and accountable governments?
